About the competition

The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) is undertaking a photography competition to encourage Kenyans to showcase different tourism destinations across the country. The aim is to showcase Kenya’s diverse tourism offering by leveraging domestic tourists across the country. Through the campaign, we hope to showcase hidden gems across the country through the lenses of Kenyans.

The campaign will leverage both mobile and professional photography to showcase what Kenya has to offer under the tagline ‘Tembea Kenya, Capture Magical Kenya’.

How to participate

The competition will run on social media through the X (Twitter), Facebook and Instagram platforms.

SUBMISSION CRITERIA:

  • Should showcase lesser-known destinations or travel experiences in Kenya that are not part of the typical safari circuit.
  • Emphasize unique aspects of the location, such as distinctive landscapes, local attractions, or cultural elements that make it a hidden gem.
  • The subject should be authentic and not overly commercialised, focusing on providing fresh perspectives or undiscovered locations.
  • Should include the hashtag #HiddenGemsKE
  • ‘Extra marks’ – showcasing an area that is ‘undiscovered’ but has the potential of being the next tourist ‘must visit’

Kenyan Wildlife Wonders

SUBMISSION CRITERIA:

  • Should feature Kenya's wildlife in their natural habitats, including well-known species like the Big Five, as well as lesser-known animals, birds, or marine life.
  • Images must prioritize ethical wildlife photography practices, ensuring no harm or distress was caused to the animals (per the ethical requirements).
  • Must capture the essence of Kenya’s diverse wildlife ecosystem, showing unique behaviours, interactions, or environments.
  • Should include the hashtag #WildlifeKE.
  • ‘Extra marks’ – capturing an animal that is, or is doing, something generally unseen.

Rich Cultural Heritage & Traditions

SUBMISSION CRITERIA:

  • Should highlight aspects of Kenya’s cultural heritage, including traditional customs, festivals, historic landmarks, or indigenous practices.
  • May include people in traditional attire, cultural performances, or crafts. Consent must be obtained for any identifiable individuals.
  • Should convey the significance of the cultural elements being portrayed, providing context or a backstory in the caption.
  • Should include the hashtag #CulturalHeritageKE.
  • ‘Extra marks’ – images that visually tell a good Kenyan story will have the best chances of winning.

Breath-taking Landscapes

SUBMISSION CRITERIA:

  • Must depict Kenya’s natural landscapes in a way that showcases the beauty and variety of the terrain.
  • Should include notable geographic features such as mountains, lakes, forests, coastlines, or valleys.

50-million Smiles - Kenyan People and Faces

SUBMISSION CRITERIA:

  • Permission should be obtained from the individuals or their guardians if they are underage.
  • Should feature candid or posed portraits of Kenyans, emphasizing the warmth, diversity, and daily life of the people.
  • Should include the hashtag #PeopleKE.
  • ‘Extra marks’ - Images that are authentic and capture real emotions, interactions, or settings that give insight into Kenyan life.

Adventure in Kenya

  • Should represent the urban energy of Kenyan cities, showcasing architecture, street scenes, nightlife, or daily life in a city environment.
  • Images may include modern infrastructure, art, food scenes, markets, and cultural expressions unique to urban life.
  • The composition should reflect the contrast or harmony between tradition and modernity in the cityscape.
  • Should include the hashtag #UrbanVibesKE.
  • ‘Extra marks’ – Image should evoke curiosity and a sense of discovery, encouraging potential visitors to engage with the diverse experiences that Kenya’s cities have to offer.

Sustainable Travel - Community & Conservation Efforts

SUBMISSION CRITERIA:

  • Must depict efforts towards sustainable tourism, environmental conservation, or community-led initiatives.
  • Images may include wildlife conservation projects, renewable energy sources (e.g., wind, solar), or local community involvement in sustainability.
  • Should highlight the balance between tourism development and environmental stewardship, showing positive impact.
  • Should include the hashtag #SustainabilityKE.
  • ‘Extra marks’ – Image should evoke hope and responsibility, encouraging sustainable travel and conservation while promoting Kenya's commitment to preserving its natural and cultural heritage.

Why should I enter?

By entering the Tembea Kenya Photo Competition, you have the chance to showcase your photography talent, tell the story of Kenya’s natural beauty, diverse culture, and rich heritage, and gain national recognition. Winners receive Ksh250,000 cash prize per category (1st place gets Ksh150,000 2nd gets ksh70,000/- and third place will get Ksh30,000/-). The competition allows you to share your work with a wide audience, potentially elevating your profile. Plus, participating gives you a chance to inspire others to explore the beauty of Kenya.

Daily prizes are fun rewards, awarded to images that we’ll celebrate on social media during the “Social Share” phase of the competition. These daily prizes offer quick recognition and rewards for popular images. The overall prize per category, however, is a larger cash award given to the top images selected by the judges after the competition period ends. These winners are determined based on image quality, alignment with category criteria, and storytelling impact.

DAILY PRIZES

During the “Social Share” phase, social media engagement (e.g. polls, likes and shares) can influence daily prize winners. Winning criteria will be clearly articulated before every prize award is adjudicated.

ENTRY TO THE COMPETITION

Socially shared images that meet the category and photography brief well will be shortlisted by our social media experts and presented to 5 independent professional photographers who will pick their 50 best images in every category. Those shortlisted will be invited to enter the main competition and as long as they meet the criteria set out in the T&Cs (see here), will then be considered entries to the main competition.

JUDGING FOR THE MAIN COMPETITION

These top 50 entries will then be subject to public voting to select the top 10 by category and those will be put in front of our expert judges to select the final top 3 by category.
If your image entry in the main competition gets to the top 10 per category, it will be subject to a panel of expert judges who will determine the winning images. Judges will include a seasoned professional photographer, a celebrity influencer familiar with photography, and a travel industry expert. They will evaluate each submission based on technical quality, creativity, cultural relevance, and impact.

About the competition

The Tembea Kenya Photography Competition (“the Competition”) is organized and managed by the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) in partnership with several sponsors, to promote Kenya’s diverse tourism attractions. The competition seeks to engage both amateur and professional photographers, encouraging them to capture the beauty of Kenya’s hidden gems, wildlife, culture, and landscapes. The purpose is to inspire travel to these destinations while fostering a sense of pride and ownership among Kenyan residents and contributing to the tourism sector.

  • The Competition is free to enter and is open to residents of Kenya, with separate categories available for participants to submit their entries.
  • As part of the Competition, winning photographs may be featured across various platforms and exhibitions organized by KTB and its partners, further promoting the richness of Kenya’s tourism offerings.

Submission Deadline
  • All entries must be submitted by 11:59 PM EAT on Sunday, November 24th, 2024 (“the Closing Date”). Late submissions will not be considered.
Eligibility
  • The competition is open to all residents of Kenya above the age of 13.
  • The following individuals and their immediate family members are not eligible to participate:
    • Employees of the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) and its partners involved in the competition’s organization and judging.
    • Sponsors and partners directly associated with the competition, if known during the entry period.
Participation Requirements

By submitting an entry, participants agree to:

  • Abide by the competition’s Terms and Conditions and ensure their entry meets the guidelines specified.
  • Submissions made via social media should comply with the terms of service of the relevant social media platforms. KTB reserves the right to disqualify any participant found to be in violation of these platform policies.
  • Maintain the highest ethical standards in all matters related to the competition.
  • Accept that they may be held responsible for any losses or damages incurred due to a breach of the rules.
Submission Criteria
  • All submitted photographs must depict Kenya’s natural landscapes, wildlife, culture, or tourism attractions as specified in the competition categories.
  • Images must be captured using a camera, and AI-generated images will not be accepted.
  • Photos that are sexually explicit, provoke political or social unrest, or are otherwise inappropriate will not be considered.
Disqualification Rules
  • Any entry found not complying with the rules may be disqualified at any stage.
  • KTB reserves the right to confirm and disclose any entry’s disqualification status if inquiries are made.
Changes and Cancellations
  • While the information in these Terms and Conditions is accurate at the time of publication, KTB reserves the right to:
    • Amend the rules or adjust prizes as necessary without prior notice.
    • Change the format of the competition’s award ceremony (in-person or online) as circumstances may require.
    • Cancel the competition and terminate any associated licenses, in which case participants will be notified.
Conduct

KTB reserves the right to disqualify any entry if the participant’s conduct is considered contrary to the spirit of the competition.

Adherence to Ethical Standards:
  • Any violation of these Ethical Requirements will be considered a breach of the competition rules, potentially leading to disqualification.
Honest Representation of the Natural World:

Photographs must present the natural world in a manner that is creative, honest, and ethical:

  • Images must not deceive viewers or misrepresent the reality of the subject matter.
  • All caption information provided must be truthful, accurate, and complete.
  • Photographs should not depict animals that are captive, restrained, manipulated, or otherwise exploited. Exceptions may apply when documenting specific issues related to the treatment of animals, in which case the captive status must be clearly disclosed.
Animal Welfare and Habitat Preservation
  • Participants must avoid any actions that could injure, distress, or endanger an animal or its habitat. The well-being of the animal should always come first.
  • Activities such as flying drones too close to wildlife or using wide-angle lenses near nests are not allowed. Telephoto lenses are encouraged to minimize disturbance.
Consent for Photographing People, Buildings, and Dwellings
  • When photographing people, participants must obtain explicit permission to use the images in the competition, and this permission must be disclosed if requested by the organisers.
  • Similarly, photographs of private properties, including buildings, dwellings, or other man-made structures, must not be taken without the appropriate permissions. If the photograph is intended for commercial use, additional legal requirements may apply.
  • Any subject that could potentially raise ethical concerns, including sacred sites, cultural artifacts, or areas with cultural or religious significance, should be photographed with sensitivity and proper authorization.
Compliance with Laws and Regulations
  • Participants must ensure full compliance with all national or international laws and regulations, including drone use and acquiring necessary permits.
  • Documentation of consent and permits may be requested by the organizers for verification purposes.
Prohibited Baiting Practices
  • The use of live baiting or any dangerous baiting methods is prohibited, as is any technique that may alter an animal’s natural behaviour or put it at risk.
  • If any baiting techniques, such as birdseed or scent, were used, this must be disclosed in the photograph’s caption. The jury will favour images captured without baiting.
Disqualification for Unethical Practices
  • If an entry is suspected to have been captured through unethical practices, including the use of live bait, lack of consent, or photographing restricted areas without permission, it will be disqualified. The organizers reserve the right to report such violations to relevant authorities.
Originality of Entries
  • To maintain a high standard of originality, we encourage participants to submit fresh, recent photographs. While it is not a strict requirement, the jury will favour recent images that have not been awarded in other international competitions.
File Format Requirements
  • Entries must be submitted in JPEG or TIFF format. High-quality scans of transparencies or negatives are also acceptable for consideration
File Specifications for Submission
  • For all categories, images must be submitted as JPEG or TIFF files, saved at a high-quality setting of at least 8 in Photoshop or equivalent software.
  • Borders, watermarks, and signatures are not allowed on the submitted images.
Requirements for Shortlisted Entries

The owners of the shortlisted photos will then be invited to submit their photos to the competition. They will have to fill out the form that:

  • Shows Identification: Name, Email, ID Number, Phone Number
  • Copyright: Confirms they have the rights to the photo, it is the original photo, Photo has not been manipulated, KTB has the right to use the photo in future.
  • If a photograph is shortlisted, participants will be asked to provide the following files for authentication:
    • RAW files (e.g., .ARW, .CR2, .NEF), original untouched JPEGs, or high-resolution scans of negatives or transparencies.
    • High-resolution files for printing (at least 2MB, ideally in TIFF format), saved as 8-bit Adobe RGB (1998) and matching the cropping and colour of the submitted JPEG.
  • Do not upscale the image; files must not exceed 100MB in size.
Authentication and Quality Control
  • To ensure the authenticity of the submitted photographs, you must provide the image’s original metadata and KTB reserves the right to verify this data as part of the judging process
  • If an entry fails authentication or is deemed to be of unsatisfactory quality, it may be disqualified. The organizers reserve the right to request a range of ‘before’ and ‘after’ files for further verification.
Permitted Digital Adjustments
  • Limited digital adjustments are allowed, provided they do not deceive the viewer or misrepresent reality. Permissible edits include:
    • Tone and contrast adjustments, cropping, sharpening, noise reduction, and minor cleaning (e.g., dust removal).
    • HDR, stitched panoramas, and focus stacking are acceptable, as long as they were captured at the same location and time.
  • Such edits must comply with the competition’s principles of authenticity and ethical representation.
Prohibited Digital Manipulations

The following digital edits are not permitted:

  • Adding, moving, or removing objects, animals, people, or significant elements.
  • Composites, AI-generated images, or manual modifications that introduce new content.
  • Painting out the background, adding elements via AI, or other practices that mislead the viewer.
Caption Requirements (if requested)
  • Captions must be complete, truthful, and detailed, describing the scene, background story, location (including GPS coordinates), and the year taken.
  • If bait was used, this must be disclosed along with its nature. Scientific or behavioural details about the species are encouraged.
  • Captions should not exceed 2,500 characters and must not contain the photographer’s name or other identifying details.
Confidentiality of Metadata
  • Do not include your name or any identifying information in the image’s metadata fields (e.g., copyright, creator, or owner).
Safeguards Against Unfair Practices
  • To ensure fairness in the public voting phase, each participant will be limited to one vote per verified account or IP address. Any attempt to manipulate the voting process, including the use of bots, will result in disqualification. The decisions of the judging panel are final and binding, and no disputes will be entertained.
Stage 1: Social Share
  • This is a user content generation stage where Kenyans will share photos of tourism-related sites and activities from across the country, tag the Magical Kenya handles on X, Facebook and Instagram and use #tembeakenyaphotocontest, and the respective hashtag of the category
  • Daily and Weekly Prizes:
    • During the 20-day Social Share period, there will be daily and weekly prizes announced at least 24 hours in advance.
    • The average prize value will be 2000/-, with higher-value weekly prizes awarded for exceptional photography that meets the category briefs.
  • Winners of the Social Share phase will be determined through popular vote based on likes, shares, and poll results on various platforms. The most engaging image in each category will win one of the 20 Social Share prizes.
Stage 2: Shortlisting of content
  • A content curation centre will be set up to shortlist the entries from collected from the social share stage and categorize them into 8 categories being:
  1. Hidden Gems of Kenya
  2. Kenyan Wildlife Wonder
  3. Rich Cultural Heritage & Traditions
  4. Breath-taking Landscapes
  5. 50 Million Smiles – Kenyan People and Faces
  6. Adventure in Kenya
  7. Urban Vibes: Kenya’s Vibrant Cities
  8. Sustainable Travel – Community & Conservation Efforts
  • The shortlist will have 100 pictures per category for total of 800 photos
  • The shortlisting will be done utilizing social media and digital tools with the team utilizing a set of criteria to evaluate the eligibility of the photos for the competition
  • The 100 photos in each category will then be subjected to judging by a panel of professional judges who will shortlist them to 50 photos per category for a total of 400 photos
    • Judges will be chosen from a cross-section of members from the Photographers Association of Kenya (PAK) and travel industry representatives.
  • Judges will evaluate images that were correctly tagged and meet the category briefs.
  • Selected images will be asked to submit an entry into the competition.
  • Only one entry per person per category will be allowed.
Final Selection: Top 10 per category to the 3 winning Images
  • A panel of three judges will deliberate and choose the top 3 images in each category from the shortlisted entries.
  • Winners will be announced on December 11th, with prizes awarded accordingly.

Top three prizes per category (1st: Ksh 150,000; 2nd: Ksh 70,000; 3rd: Ksh 30,000).

Notification: Winners will be contacted via email or direct social media message.

Taxes
  • All prizes are subject to applicable tax laws and winners are solely responsible for paying any applicable taxes, duties, or other fees related to their prize
  • Winners may be asked to participate in publicity activities, including the publication of their names and photographs.

  • KTB reserves the right to display and share submitted images on its website, social media, and promotional materials.

(a) Participants must certify that they are the original creators of the submitted images and that they hold all necessary rights, permissions, and consents to submit the images for the competition. Participants agree to indemnify KTB against any third-party claims arising from the unauthorized use of the images

(b) Accordingly, any photograph you submit to the Competition must either be:

  • (i) your original photograph captured on camera; or
  • (ii) an original photograph captured on camera by another photographer, submitted by you on their behalf. In this case, you must provide the photographer’s name and, upon request, written confirmation that you are authorised to submit their work and that they accept these Rules.

(2) You must either be the sole copyright owner of the submitted photograph(s) or have secured written permission from the copyright owner(s) to enter the photographs in the Competition. A copy of this written permission must be provided upon confirmation of your photograph being shortlisted for an Award.

(3) Ownership of the copyright for any entry submitted to the Competition remains with the copyright owner(s).

(4) In consideration of your entry, you grant KTB the right to reproduce, publicise, and exhibit your photograph in any medium (including physical copies, electronic copies, and on social media) to facilitate judging by the Jury or public vote.

(5) For photographs entered in the competition, you grant KTB, and any organisations acting on our behalf the right, during the License Period, a royalty-free license to:

  • (i) reproduce and exhibit the photograph(s) for the marketing and promotion of tourism on offline and online media this will include but not limited to social media channels, websites, email marketing, print advertising, out of home channels, TV and any other channel.

(6) The License Period commences upon notification of your Award and lasts for five (5) years. After this period:

  • (i) KTB will retain archive copies of your photographs; and promotional materials created using the said photograph(s).
  • (ii) Any use of the photography and promotional material after five years will be subject to separate arrangements.

 (7) KTB, and any sublicensed organisations will credit you or the photographer when using a photograph. However, we are not liable for inadvertent omissions of such credit.

(8) Participants must provide written consent (model releases) if their photographs include recognizable individuals to avoid violations of privacy or image rights. You must ensure that any photographs submitted are taken with the consent of:

  • (i) anyone identifiable in the photograph; or
  • (ii) the consent of their parent/guardian if they are under 16. Additionally, these individuals must be informed that the photograph may be submitted to the Competition and used in accordance with these Rules.

(9) Entering the Competition does not grant any rights regarding names, logos, or other intellectual property owned by KTB or the Competition. You agree not to make public statements using such intellectual property without our prior written consent.

(10) While we will remind the public that copyright remains with the photographers, we acknowledge that we cannot prevent public sharing of photographs. You waive any rights to bring claims against KTB, for such sharing.

(11) The term “any medium,” as used in this section, includes but is not limited to prints, billboards, books, magazines, digital media, applications, TV commercials and social media channels.

(12) We reserve the right to disqualify any entry or remove a photograph from the Competition if we reasonably deem the display to be criminal or infringing on third-party rights.

(13) Participants agree to indemnify and hold harmless KTB from any claims, damages, or liabilities arising from third-party disputes concerning the use of images, including claims related to unauthorized use of personal likeness or property

KTB is not liable for any lost or misdirected entries. Proof of electronic submission does not guarantee receipt by us.

The organiser will not be held responsible for any technical issues affecting entry submissions or the judging process.

We cannot be held responsible for emails that do not arrive due to your email security settings or restrictions imposed by your Internet Service Provider. You must ensure that your settings allow emails from [email protected]

Except as expressly stated elsewhere in these Rules, and to the fullest extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for any loss or damage suffered by you in relation to the Competition, the use of your entry in accordance with these Rules, or the use of any prize. This exclusion includes, but is not limited to, liability for loss of or damage to any entry, misuse of photographs, and failure of any third-party licensee to comply with the credit obligations specified in these Rules.

Personal data collected during the competition will only be used for administration purposes.

Data will not be shared with third parties without the participant’s consent, except where required for publicity.

By participating, you consent to the collection, use, and storage of your personal data in line with the Data Protection Act. KTB will ensure that personal data is protected through appropriate security measures and will only collect the data necessary for the competition’s administration

KTB is not liable for delays, modifications, or cancellations due to events outside its control, such as natural disasters, strikes, or pandemics.

We shall not be in breach of these Rules nor liable for delay in performing, or failure to perform, any of its obligations under these Rules if such delay or failure result from events, circumstances or causes beyond its reasonable control. In such circumstances, we shall be entitled to a reasonable extension of the time for performing such obligations. If the period of delay or non-performance continues for 1 week, we may terminate the contract created by these Rules with you by giving you 14 days’ written notice.

KTB reserves the right to modify, suspend, or cancel the competition in case of unforeseen circumstances beyond its control. In such cases, KTB shall not be held liable for any losses or damages suffered by participants due to the modification, suspension, or cancellation of the competition.

These Rules and any other webpages or documents incorporated into them constitute the entire agreement between you and us and supersedes and extinguishes all previous agreements, promises, assurances, warranties, representations and understandings between them, whether written or oral, relating to its subject matter, including but not limited to any advertising or promotional materials. You agree that you shall have no remedies in respect of any statement, representation, assurance or warranty (whether made innocently or negligently) that is not set out in these Rules.

No third party shall have any rights to enforce any of these terms and conditions.

The competition is governed by the laws of Kenya, and any disputes will be subject to Kenyan courts’ jurisdiction.
